It is good academic practice to build on the work of others. However, such work can be protected by intellectual property rights like copyrights and patents.
This workshop will enable you to navigate the field of intellectual property law in a research context. On the one hand, you will get to know whether and how you can control the use of your own work. On the other hand, you will learn how to take advantage of the discretion researchers have to use others' work without consulting the rights holder first.
Qualification Outcomes
After the workshop, you will be able to
- Give an overview of different IP rights and their scope in order to differentiate which rights can be affected by your research.
- Use others’ works in your own scientific publications, presentations and posters without infringing intellectual property rights.
- Determine what intellectual property rights apply to your own research by learning how to interpret the legal requirements.
- Control the use of your research and know how you can make your research legally available.
- Explain how patents are protected by law and how you can use patented work.
- Differentiate between different types of patent protection, including the novel European Unitary Patent.
- Read patent application documents and understand the requirements for granting patent protection.
