Researchers negotiate all the time, usually without calling it that: authorship and author order, access to equipment and data, the terms of a collaboration, supervision agreements, contract extensions, and eventually salaries and start-up packages. Many of these negotiations take place within hierarchies and long-term relationships, where simply "winning" is not an option.
This workshop does not teach a single recipe. You will get to know four complementary approaches to negotiation, try each of them in simulations, and learn to judge which approach fits which situation and which suits your own style.
Qualification Outcomes
After the workshop, you will be able to
- Prepare a negotiation systematically, including interests, options, criteria and alternatives.
- Read the motives of your counterpart and frame proposals accordingly.
- Use listening and questioning techniques to handle difficult moments.
Methods
Short inputs, negotiation simulations in breakout rooms with structured debriefing, work on participants' own cases, a preparation worksheet, and peer consulting
Requirements
To participate in the online event you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome or Firefox) as well as a headset (or speakers and microphone), a webcam plus a stable Internet connection.
