The workshop "Ready for Doctoral Supervision: Expectation Management, Supervision Agreement, and Onboarding" is designed for those who supervise doctoral candidates and want to ensure a focused, effective, and productive supervision process from the very beginning.
Key topics include managing expectations, creating a clear supervision agreement, and structuring the onboarding process for doctoral candidates. This workshop will help you reflect on your own expectations for supervision and provide strategies for communicating these expectations effectively and transparently with your doctoral candidates, preventing misunderstandings and disappointments. Additionally, you'll learn how a well-structured supervision agreement can offer guidance and support to both you as the supervisor and your doctoral candidates.
Another focus is on developing a smooth onboarding process, helping your doctoral candidates integrate successfully into their research projects and the academic community.
Contents
- Basics of expectation management: The importance of discussing expectations at the start of the supervisory relationship; reflecting on your own expectations; formulating clear and realistic expectations
- Communication techniques for effective expectation management: Clarity and precision, encouraging doctoral candidates to reflect on expectations, structuring and documenting conversations
- Goal setting and support through supervision agreements
- Structuring a smooth onboarding process
- Addressing common challenges and conflicts during onboarding
