The first weeks of a doctoral project often decide whether the collaboration between supervisor and doctoral researcher will thrive or struggle. This two-hour online workshop supports experienced postdocs and emerging research group leaders as they grow into the supervisory role. Participants learn to make mutual expectations explicit, to distinguish their role as supervisor from their role as assessor, to negotiate a supervision agreement as a shared commitment rather than a formality, and to design a structured onboarding for the first 100 days. A short spotlight addresses a specific challenge: supervisors from artistic disciplines who have not completed a doctorate themselves but supervise academic doctoral projects, where supervisory teams become the key. The workshop is highly interactive: brief inputs alternate with breakout work on the participants' own cases, and everyone leaves with two ready-to-use tools, a supervision-agreement template and an onboarding checklist. Every participant also receives a free copy of the trainer's book "Abschlussarbeiten aus Prüfersicht" (ISBN 978-3-911872-02-7).

Methods

- Guided breakout work on participants' own supervision cases, and two take-away tools (supervision-agreement template, onboarding checklist).
- Learner-centred and activating, drawing on the trainer's extensive cross-disciplinar supervision experience.
Prerequisites
No prior supervision training is required.
To participate, you will need a laptop/PC with a camera, microphone and internet access. The Zoom platform as well as other tools will be used during the workshop and you will receive the link to the online platform a few days prior to the event.
