This talk examines academic career prospects and non-academic career trajectories of PhD graduates in Germany from an empirical perspective. Drawing on comprehensive survey and administrative data, it analyzes employment conditions during the doctoral phase, appointment probabilities to professorships, and career developments within and outside academia. By highlighting disciplinary differences and sectoral transitions, the presentation provides an evidence-based view of the opportunities and constraints shaping careers after the PhD.
