On the first workshop day, we will focus on the foundations of structured project planning: defining clear project goals, structuring work packages and milestones, developing realistic timelines, identifying stakeholders and responsibilities, and anticipating typical risks in research projects. You have the possibilty to apply these methods directly to your own research context through practical exercises and examples.
On the second day, the focus shifts to the active management of ongoing projects. We will explore how to deal with changes and uncertainty, prioritize tasks, organize your work, communicate effectively with project partners, and respond to deviations from the original project plan. You will also get to know selected agile methods and discuss how they can be adapted to research projects.
Qualification Outcomes
After the workshop, you will be able to
- Structure and plan research projects using clear goals, work packages, milestones and timelines.
- Actively manage projects, including priorities, risks, changes and deviations from the original plan.
- Apply practical project management tools and methods to your own research context.
Methods
Throughout the workshop, practical application is key. Short inputs are combined with exercises, case studies, reflection and peer exchange.

Dr. Vanessa Hilleringmann
Dr. Vanessa Hilleringmann is an independent consultant and trainer specialising in project, process and requirements management as well as digital transformation. She holds a PhD in Economics and has extensive experience supporting universities and public-sector organisations in complex research, transformation and digitalisation projects. As a certified Professional Scrum Master and Product Owner, she combines traditional and agile project management approaches. Her workshops focus on practical application, interactive learning and the direct transfer of methods to participants’ own projects.
