In the context of multiple ecological, political-economic and social crises dynamics the question of socio-ecological transformation has during the last decades gained increasing importance, both in scholarly and activist debates. However, recent global trends towards authoritarianism, nationalism, ultra-neoliberalism and a renaissance of fossilism in many parts of the world, pose a wide range of challenges for such a transformation, particularly if it is to be emancipatory – i.e. radical democratic and inclusive. The international symposium deals with these challenges from a multi-scalar and global/transnational perspective, taking multiple interrelated political-economic, and socio-ecological reconfigurations into account. These include: a deepening of ecological crises and of the crisis of social reproduction; the emergence of new geopolitical order shaped by the growing rivalry between the US and China, the resurgence of the BRICS and an increasing global competition over strategic resources and markets to safeguard national competitiveness; and global tendency towards democratic regression and cultural backlash in terms of nationalism, anti-feminism, the proliferation of authoritarian orders, and the rise of the far right.
